ITV Racing Preview: Whisper it quietly at Newbury

It’s a big day of racing from across the UK today with the ITV crew stationed at Newbury and Newcastle.

The Ladbrokes Trophy is the highlight of the day with a number of big names gunning for glory at Newbury.

We’ve also got the Grade One Fighting Fifth Hurdle from Newcastle to look forward to as well.

As always, the Ladbrokes News crew delves into the form book for some cracking bets for the ITV Racing Tips…

NAP – Whisper – 15:00, Newbury

All eyes will be on the top of the betting for the Ladbrokes Trophy. Total Recall is favourite but it’s lower down we’re going for our NAP.

This race is wide open and that’s why we really like the look of Whisper. Nicky Henderson’s nine-year-old won at Kempton on his comeback appearance a couple of weeks ago.

He does have a 4lb penalty but that shouldn’t be too much of a concern here. He’s much better suited to this kind of track at Newbury and we fancy him to run very well indeed.

NB – Air Force One – 13:50, Newbury

Air Force One is the big fancy here. Connections are delighted with his progress, particularly his performance at Ascot last month.

The six-year-old ran at a particularly high-level last season and should be extra-confident up against a field he should beat.

He will face decent competition from Amour De Nuit and Old Guard but should justify favouritism here.

Lively Longshot – Irving – 14:10, Newcastle

It’s off to the North East as we finish up this column with the Grade One Fighting Fifth Hurdle from Newcastle.

Buveur D’Air is the big favourite here and rightly so considering his Champion Hurdle success at Cheltenham.

He’s only got four rivals to face in this renewal so it’s possible there could be a sense of complacency. And that’s where Irving comes in.

Paul Nicholls’ star is nine-years-old now but surely still retains a huge amount of class. He’s won this race in 2014 and 2016 and is at long enough odds to justify one more shot at glory.
