Mikel Arteta has emerged as one of the frontrunners to take over from Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

The Spaniard played for the Gunners from between 2011 and 2016 before joining Manchester City as assistant coach.

His impressive work at the Etihad has seen his odds tumble from 40/1 into just 8/1 for the top job at the Emirates – making him the biggest mover in the market this year.

However, he’s still only third-favourite for the North London gig.

Diego Simeone remains at the head of the betting at 4/1, with Thomas Tuchel available at 9/2.

The ex-Everton midfield does, though, stand a better chance than two Arsenal legends.

Patrick Viera is quoted at 9/1, while Dennis Bergkamp – currently a coach at Ajax – is 25/1 to replace Wenger in the dugout.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Arteta’s odds of taking over at Arsenal have fallen substantially today, to the point where he’s now being considered a genuine frontrunner for the Emirates hotseat.”
