Here’s what Watford need to do in the January window

January is a pivotal moment of the season for most teams. The January transfer window opens and that gives sides the opportunity to improve.

For some outfits, it can mean the difference between a great escape or European football.

The Ladbrokes News team are profiling all 20 Premier League clubs.

Here it’s Watford’s turn to go under the microscope…

What they need

The Hornets have a porous team – one of the leakiest in the division. That’s somewhat down to how they play, and also the quality of their defenders and midfielders.

They need to tighten up a little, but a bit of Premier League know-how and experience wouldn’t go amiss.

Who they’re targeting?

There have been no major rumours or reports so far, but we’ve got a few suggestions in mind.

Would a cheeky move for Michael Carrick be out of the question? The Manchester United midfielder’s career is winding down. An 18-month contract and a stay in the Premier League would surely entice him.

Another possible target to consider would be Muhamed Besic. The Bosnian can’t get near the Everton starting XI and could be open to a move.

Who they might lose?

Troy Deeney has long been linked with a transfer. The club captain has only started seven games this season and could be allowed to leave for big money.

Abdoulaye Doucoure has impressed in midfield this term with six goals and all-action displays. Bigger clubs could come sniffing.

Final Thought

Watford are in an odd position. The Hornets have been punching above their weight for most of the season until a recent slide.

The Hertfordshire outfit are in no danger of going down so won’t need to spend too much money.

A sprinkling of savvy purchases should do the trick nicely.
