ITV Racing Preview: Make the Smart Call at Kempton

| 06.04.2018

The 2018 Grand National isn’t far off now with just a week until the biggest race of the year.

But the racing keeps on ticking over with flat and jumps action live on ITV from Kempton and Kelso.

And the Ladbrokes News crew keep you up to date with some top tips and a preview of the major races on the day…

NAP – Smart Call – 3:15, Kempton

Our best bet for today starts in the showpiece at Kempton in the Snowdrop Fillies’ Stakes.

The standout name – and actually heads the betting – is Sir Michael Stoute’s classy sort, Smart Call. Stoute drops his six-year-old back to Listed Company having ran her in Group 2 and Group 1 races without much success.

She did run well in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Ascot in June but was no match for Highland Reel in Hong Kong back in December.

She’s 9lbs better off than each of her main rivals here and should gain some much-needed confidence with a win.

NB – Yala Enki – 3:00, Kelso

We go north to Scotland for the Liz Adam Memorial Handicap Chase and one our favourite go-to horses, Yala Enki.

Venetia Williams’ eight-year-old mudlark won this race and last year and is back to defend his crown. The ground probably won’t be as soft as he’d like it but he’s in excellent form.

He ran a decent sixth to Coo Star Sivola in the Ultima Handicap Chase at Cheltenham last month. And he won the Grand National Trial at Haydock in his second-last outing.

He’ll face decent competition from the likes of Baywing and Wild West Wing but he enjoys the course, the trip, and the cut in the ground shouldn’t be an issue.

Lively Longshot – Letemgo – 3:35, Kelso

Staying at Kelso and the Edinburgh Gin Handicap, there’s an interesting runner in Andrew Hamilton’s Letemgo.

The Irish-bred raider switched from Chris Gordon to the tutelage of Hamilton and it’s worked well, particularly recently. The 10-year-old has won three of his last four starts and could relish the step up in this class 2 renewal.

Ross Chapman is booked for the ride once again having saddled him for two of those wins. As Lively Longshots go, Letemgo isn’t a bad one to finish the day off.

ITV Racing Tips:

1:50 Kelso – Teddy Tee
2:05 Kempton – A Momentofmadness
2:25 Kelso – Nietzsche
2:40 Kempton – Raucous e/w
3:00 Kelso – Yala Enki (NB)
3:15 Kempton – Smart Call (NAP)
3:35 Kelso – Letemgo (Lively Longshot)
