Odds suggest Players Championship is wide-open

The PGA Tour swings along to the ever-popular Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass this weekend.

And it should be a rip-roaring affair with a stellar field on show in Florida.

Jordan Spieth is the marginal favourite, but odds of 14/1 highlight how tough the competition is going to be.

The American has posted several top-10s this season, but he’s yet to really show that 2015-quality so far. Spieth missed the cut last time out and is winless this season.

Dustin Johnson is one of four men next up at 16/1. DJ is ranking first when it comes to scoring average this season, and second for putting average, so the 2016 US Open winner is in good form.

The world number one hasn’t quite hooked it up on all four days of a tournament in 2018, however and has never posted a top-10 in the Players.

But a man in form is Jason Day. Who heads to Florida fresh from victory at Wells Fargo.

The Australian also won the Farmers Insurance Open in January, and came home second at Pebble Beach. Day is pretty comfortable at Sawgrass too, winning this event by four strokes in 2016.

Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy are also in the 16/1 club. The former hit a sweet spot earlier with victory in the Honda Classic and second in the WGC Mexico, but has lost something in recent events.

As for Rory, he’ll be the talk of the town once again after some controversial comments about the Masters versus the Open.

It’s been a patchy season for the Northern Irishman, and a win would go a long way to announcing his return to form.

2015 Players champion Rickie Fowler can be backed at 20s, with a host of huge names coming up at 33/1.

Masters champions Patrick Reed and Sergio Garcia are each 33s, as is Phil Mickelson.

And so is Tiger Woods. The 14-time major champion is continuing his return to form, and has so far enjoyed a steady season with three top-10 finishes.

Woods goes well at Sawgrass though, winning the Players in 2001 and 2013 in addition to the Florida venue being the scene of his first US Amateur title way back in 1994.

Further back, Brian Harman has posted seven top-10 finishes from 14 events on this year’s PGA Tour. He’s 6/1 to do so again and 80/1 to go all the way and win it.
