Sunday sees the climax of the Premier League campaign. And there’s still a fair bit to play for, from Champions League spots to another potential Manchester City milestone.
Here’s what’s still up for grabs on the final day…
Can Man City open the 100 club?
Pep Guardiola’s Citizens made history on Wednesday night with a 3-1 defeat of Brighton and Hove Albion. That win saw them hit the highest ever Premier League points total, edging past Chelsea’s 2004-05 feat of 95.
And they could make further history on Sunday by hitting the 100-point mark. To do that, they’ll have to beat Southampton at St Mary’s. Following five successive Prem away wins, it’s 4/9 for City to secure victory on the South Coast.
Top-four tussle reaches its climax
Chelsea kept their slim hopes of a Champions League spot alive last night, grabbing a point against hard-working Huddersfield Town. That leaves the fifth-placed Blues two points behind Liverpool, heading into the final day.
Despite taking Europe by storm, the Reds seem to have lost focus in the league. They’ve picked up just two points from their last three league games.
If Brighton can pull off a surprise victory over Jurgen Klopp’s men on Sunday, then Chelsea can secure top-four with a win at Newcastle United. Right now, it’s 16/1 for Chelsea to bag a UCL spot, but stranger things have happened.
Alternately, if Liverpool do beat the Seagulls, they could knock Tottenham Hotspur out of third – provided Spurs fail to beat Leicester City at Wembley.
Gunners bidding to end unwanted record
Arsenal will be looking to give departing boss Arsene Wenger a good send-off at Huddersfield this weekend. But they’ll also be motivated by a desire to ward off an unwanted record.
As it stands, the North London club are the only team in England’s top five divisions not to pick up a point away from home in 2018. So, after seven successive league defeats – can they finally end on a high?
They’ll be hoping Huddersfield ease off after securing Prem safety in midweek. But having held Manchester City and Chelsea to draws in their last two games, the Terriers could well claw their way to victory on Sunday.
Swans need a final-day miracle
Ahead of Sunday’s home game against basement-dwelling Stoke City, Carlos Carvalhal’s Swansea City are 1/500 for relegation. Here’s what we’d need to see if they were to pull off an unprecedented survival job.
The Swans would need to beat Stoke. That’s definitely plausible, with the Potters now 13 games without a win. And Southampton would need to lose against Man City. Again, there’s a good chance of that.
However, we’d need to see a 10-goal swing in those two games. It’s extremely unlikely, but the final day has been known to produce some crazy scorelines….
