How is Andy Murray shaping up ahead of Wimbledon?

Published:

It’s been a tough year for Andy Murray. Hip surgery and gruelling rehab sessions kept him off the court for almost a year.

He hasn’t featured in a Grand Slam since last year’s Wimbledon. He’s stepped up his recovery with three matches recently, but will he be ready to play at SW19 next week?

The 31-year-old played his first match since last summer against Nick Kyrgios at Queen’s. He took the first set before losing the next two. After so long out, it was an encouraging showing.

He stepped it up with a win over Stan Wawrinka at Eastbourne on Monday. But then he lost to Kyle Edmunds in Wednesday’s round of 16 clash. Edmunds has overtaken Murray as the British number one during his injury lay-off.

The Glasgow-born star hasn’t got the results he’d have liked in his comeback so far, but he’s not lost any of his competitive instincts. He’s still been shouting at himself when he makes an error. He chucked his racquet to the ground after a double fault against Edmund too.

The fitness isn’t quite there yet though. He was understandably tired towards the end of all three of his comeback games so far. But a five-set Grand Slam match will be much more demanding.

Murray’s a 16/1 shot to go all the way at Wimbledon. With Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal all in better shape, it may be best for him to view this year’s event as a chance to get back towards his best, rather than a full championship challenge.
