France v Croatia tips: Mbappe to seal superstar status in the final?

Published:

France and Croatia clash in the World Cup Final in front of 78,000 people at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow today.

Both sides have faced difficult passages through. France have played the better quality opponent, but Croatia have faced three extra-times.

Les Bleus are the 10/11 favourites, with Croatia out at 18/5. The Draw is available at 21/10.

France have a clean bill of health for Sunday’s showpiece. Didier Deschamps is unlikely to make any changes from the side that beat Belgium.

For Croatia, Zlatko Dalic will be sweating on the fitness of Ivan Strinic who limped out of the last-four win over England. Recovery will be hugely important for Dalic’s squad.

Having gone to extra-time in each knockout round, surely Vatreni are mentally and physically fatigued? There will obviously be a buzz about making the final but a lot of physical energy and emotion has been expended.

And what makes matters worse is that France don’t look like they’ve even hit top gear yet. Deschamps’ side have been doing the bare minimum in most games and still winning.

Croatia haven’t made it to a World Cup Final for nothing though. Luka Modric was absolutely sensational in the semi-final. And he’s been ably assisted by some fine performances from Ante Rebic and Sime Vrsaljko at right-back.

Modric and co. have a nice blend of experienced veterans and mid-twenties aces. If they can shake off the tiredness, they’ll at least be in with a good chance.

Can we expect goals? Don’t count on them. Since 1990, three of seven have ended goalless, including each of the last two. And France have looked incredibly solid at the back.

The only sides to score against Les Bleus were Australia in the opener and Argentina in the last-16. Both sides to score here is unsurprisingly priced at 27/20. France to Win to Nil is 17/10.

Kylian Mbappe has arguably been the star of the tournament. His performance against Argentina made a mockery of the fact he’s just 19-years-old. He’s scored three goals in the tournament and could be up against a half-fit and sluggish Strinic.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward is 19/10 to find the net Anytime. Antoine Griezmann has been left in the former’s shadow. But the Atletico Madrid star is still a match-winner on his day. He’s also 19/10 to score Anytime.

If you do fancy Croatia to make a proper game of it, Rebic has looked very dangerous for Croatia throughout the tournament. The Fiorentina wide forward is 4/1 to hit the onion bag at Anytime.

When does the game kick off – 4:00pm

Where can I watch it? – Coverage begins at 3:45pm on ITV and 3:50pm on BBC
