What does Lewis Hamilton need to do to win this year’s F1 title?

The 2018 Formula One season is approaching it’s halfway point, and Lewis Hamilton faces a huge fight if he’s to claim a fifth world championship.
Hamilton finds himself locked in a fierce scrap with fellow quadruple champ Sebastian Vettel.
Vettel’s Ferrari team have made huge strides in recent years, and Mercedes ace Hamilton is eight points behind in the standings.
Our traders still make the Briton odds-on at 4/6 to land the title this year, but Vettel is right there in the mix at 6/5.
We’ve cast our eye on proceedings so far, and picked out three things Hamilton must do if he’s to fend off his German rival this season…
Keep his head
Hamilton has been in F1 for 11 years now, but his early career was punctured by rash decisions. They arguably cost him the title in 2010.
Those mistakes are rare nowadays, but in a title fight, keeping calm and composed is vital. Ferrari are piling on the pressure but Hamilton can’t afford to crumble like he used to or like Vettel did in Singapore last season.
Find his peak performance
There’s a feeling that Hamilton still hasn’t quite hit 10/10 this season, aside from a dominant win in Spain.
But this follows a trend from last season where Lewis really switched it on following the summer break. From the Belgian Grand Prix onwards, Lewis won five of six races in superb style to steal the championship advantage.
If Lewis does have more to offer, then he needs to show it over the next few races.
Racing Luck
Luck always has a role to play, and this season is no different.
Hamilton was pitched into a spin by Kimi Raikkonen in Sunday’s British Grand Prix. Though he recovered to finish second, it could easily have been another retirement.
There are 19 other drivers on the grid, and any one of them could have an incidental yet pivotal say in who wins this year’s title.
