US Open tips: Murray, Nadal and Williams feature

Published:

After Simona Halep’s shock first round exit on day one, Brit Johanna Konta was downed yesterday by Caroline Garcia.

It means the 27-year-old hasn’t passed beyond round two of any of this year’s Grand Slam tournaments.

But it’s Andy Murray’s comeback that is drawing a lot of the fanfare though.

After overcoming James Duckworth in the opening round, a tougher test awaits at the hands of Fernando Verdasco.

Murray has only lost one of their fourteen matches though and is 4/7 to win again. The Brit, who has won the first set in each of their last four matches, is 8/13 to bag the first set.

Verdasco may fancy his chances with Murray still working his way into form. The Spaniard is 11/8 to advance.

Sloane Stephens defeated compatriot Madison Keys in last year’s final. The 25-year-old faces Anhelina Kalinina in the second round here.

It’s 1/5 for Stephens to win in straight sets. Halep’s defeat should mean the American doesn’t slip up here, but Kalinina is 8/1 for victory.

Keeping to the women’s side of the draw, Serena Williams is looking to shake off her Wimbledon final loss with a win against Carina Witthoeft.

Williams is 1/14 for victory and could blitz her inexperienced opponent. Witthoeft, won her first WTA singles title in Luxembourg last year, and is 9/2 to secure what would be the biggest win of her career.

Eighth seed Karolina Pliskova takes to Court 5 to meet Ana Bogdan this evening.

Pliskova has won all of her four meetings with the Romanian and is 4/11 to do it again.

Bogdan is 9/4 to grab her first victory over the 2016 US Open finalist.

After injury befell David Ferrer in the opening round, Rafael Nadal now takes on Vasek Pospisil as he maps out his route to the final.

Nadal won on the hard courts in 2015 but they are yet to play in a Grand Slam.

The returning champion is the 1/33 favourite with Pospisil at 12/1.

Third seed Juan Martin Del Potro is also in action. It’s 8/15 for the Argentine to serve up another straight sets win.

He meets a familiar face in Denis Kudla who he defeated on the hard court at Delray Beach in 2016.

Kudla’s 7/1 for the win, Del Potro is 1/14 to make round three.
