Croatia v England. Just four months after the World Cup semi-final the two teams do battle again.

The prize may not be a World Cup final but both nations are in need of three points on the path to Euro 2020 qualification.

Croatia’s win in the summer has upped the ante on this one. But a couple of months on Croatia are 8/5 for the victory. The Three Lions will be looking for revenge and are 15/8 to score the win.

So which players from both sides would make up the best combined XI? Read on to find out…

GK: Jordan Pickford

Danijel Subasic may have got the nod had he not retired. But with Croatia ushering in a new clutch of goalkeepers it leaves Pickford as the outstanding candidate.

Pickford only cemented his number one spot for the Three Lions during the World Cup but became a hero in the penalty shoot-out win over Colombia.

At only 24-years-old he is only going to get better.

RB: Kieran Trippier

Sime Vrsaljko is a big shout but Kieran Trippier became a national idol last summer. His free-kick goal in the semi-final lifted the roof of thousands homes and pubs around England.

Trippier showed he is equally as comfortable playing at full-back or wing-back and has been a consistent performer for some time now.

CB: John Stones

John Stones was at his composed and silky best on the world stage. He picked up where he left off after winning the Premier League title with Manchester City.

Backed by Pep Guardiola, Stones is sure to be one of the most-decorated English defenders in history.

CB: Harry Maguire

Nicknamed ‘slabhead’ the 25-year-old rose to prominence last summer in the World Cup. He partnered John Stones in a formidable duo in England’s defence.

Domagoj Vida and Dejan Lovren may feel hard done by here. But as we all know a solid defensive pairing is hard to find and shouldn’t be hastily split up.

LB: Ivan Strinic

Ivan Strinic’s performances in Croatia’s run to the final in Russia earned him a move to AC Milan in July.

He isn’t playing right now after a heart condition has meant he has had to take some time away from football.

But he provided a great outlet on the Croatian’s left hand side. One that Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell will be looking to replicate.

CM: Mateo Kovacic

Kovacic may have not got as much game time as he’d like in the summer, but has looked a star ever since joining Chelsea on loan from Real Madrid.

The 24-year-old is comfortably keeping the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Ruben Loftus-Cheek out of the Blues’ side and will form a scary midfield three with his compatriots.

CM: Ivan Rakitic

The goal against Spurs in the Champions League group-stage just underlined the myriad of talents that Ivan Rakitic has at his disposal.

A three-time La Liga winner, four-time Copa del Rey champ and with a Champions League to his name, how can he not feature in this XI?

CM: Luka Modric

He oozes class and never looks flustered. Luke Modric was thought to be too lightweight for the Premier League and not ready for a move to Real Madrid in 2013.

But has gone on to prove the doubters wrong tenfold. The current FIFA ‘Best player’ award is now 2/5 on to win the Balon d’Or.

LW: Ivan Perisic

The Croatian winger showed his quality scoring in both the semi-final and final of the World Cup. But the 29-year-old has been a consistent performer for many years now.

Almost habitually linked to Manchester United every summer. He may get his move to the Premier League after all.

ST: Harry Kane

The World Cup Golden Boot winner simply has to be in the side. Kane has become one of Europe’s most feared marksman over the last three years.

His Premier League scoring record reads 25, 29 and 30 league goals in the last three season.

He already has five goals in eight leagues games this current campaign and is someone the whole Kockasti team will fear.

RW: Raheem Sterling

Maybe he didn’t get the plaudits he deserved in the summer, but Sterling is vital to Gareth Southgate’s freshly-inspired England.

A player who is now starting to score goals as freely as he assists is arguably the man who is most vital to how the Three Lions play.
