EFL Trophy Tips: Sunderland, Accrington and Pompey set for success?

| 09.10.2018

With the Premier League on hiatus for two weeks and the Nations League yet to get going, it’s down to the EFL Trophy to tide us over this evening.

There are 24 ties to get stuck into, and we’ve tipped up five of the standout ones below.

Sunderland v Carlisle United

These two have a habit of meeting in cup competitions. Tonight’s clash is the third time they’ve gone head-to-head in four years, with Sunderland taking the spoils on both occasions so far.

They’re in much better form than any of the prior meetings too. The Black Cats have won more games this season than they had done in the 11 months preceding the 2018-19 opening day.

They’re 5/6 to rack up another success here, while you can back Sunderland Win and Both Teams to Score in the fixture for the third time in a row at 13/5.

Accrington Stanley v Macclesfield Town

No outright wins for Macclesfield since their return to the Football League doesn’t bode well for them ahead of this evening’s trip to League One high-flyers Accrington.

John Coleman will likely make changes against managerless Macc. But the hosts should still have enough at 6/10 to extend their home run to just a single defeat in 19 matches.

Coventry City v Forest Green Rovers

Forest Green are the only side left in the EFL with an unbeaten record – save a penalty shootout defeat to Wycombe Wanderers in August.

Opponents Coventry have found success hard to come by since promotion to League One. They went down 3-0 to Arsenal U21s last time out in this competition. FGR should pose a sterner test.

The visitors are 13/5 to win outright, or 3/4 in the Double Chance market. Dayle Grubb is 21/10 to net a second goal in as many matches in the EFL Trophy.

Shrewsbury Town v Tranmere Rovers

Wins have been hard to come by for tonight’s hosts. They’ve chalked up just two outright victories this term. Draws have been the order of the day in Shropshire – with seven so far this season.

Tonight’s match is likely to be another tight affair given that only two of Tranmere’s matches this campaign  have been decided by more than one goal. The draw is 5/2, with a 1-1 stalemate at 11/2.

Crawley Town v Portsmouth

Portsmouth brushed Crawley aside in this competition last year to rack up their fourth straight victory over the Red Devils. They’re 4/5 to make that five in a row in Sussex tonight.

Kenny Jackett’s men have scored two or more in each of those four previous wins. It’s 8/5 about them adding to their tally of 17 goals in eight matches by Winning with Over 2.5 Goals in the match.
