Dynamo Kiev v Chelsea tips: Can the Blues cruise into the quarter-finals?

| 14.03.2019

Chelsea take a commanding 3-0 lead into the second leg of their Europa League Round of 16 tie against Dynamo Kiev, with one foot already in the quarter-finals.

Blues boss Maurizio Sarri has taken a full strength with him to Ukraine in order to avoid a complacent attitude and ensure their spot in the last eight.

Dynamo Kiev have it all to do and it looks unlikely that they’ll be able to turn the tie around, but in football you can never rule out the seemingly impossible. We’ve got all the odds and preview ahead of kick-off in the earlier Europa League game…

Match odds

Chelsea haven’t lost in the three previous meetings against the Ukrainian side, winning twice and drawing once. They’re favourites to maintain that unbeaten record, and favourites to win the match at 20/23.

That draw came in the only other meeting in Ukraine when a 0-0 draw was played out in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League group stages. The draw is priced at 12/5.

Coming into the game with a 3-0 deficit to overturn, in reality Kiev have nothing to lose. They could go all out and hope Chelsea crumble. It’s not an easy place to go, and that stands in their favour. Although they’re outsiders, they’re not too distant at 13/4.

Talking tactics

Sarri has a selection headache with a huge league clash away to Everton coming up on Sunday. Does he stick with his strongest XI, or play more of the youth to give the senior stars a rest?

Eden Hazard was due to be rested for this tie, but asked to be included in the 23-man squad. It’s still likely he’ll take a spot on the bench.

There are no injury worries or suspensions in the Chelsea squad, but Ross Barkley would miss the next tie if he’s booked here. He could be rested in favour of Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Dynamo Kiev welcome back Benjamin Verbic for the second leg. They’ll be hoping he can provide the spark they lacked at Stamford Bridge.

They will be without Vitaliy Buyalskyi after his suspension for accumulation of yellow cards in the competition.

Denys Harmash, Volodymyr Shepelyev and Tomasz Kedziora will all miss out if they make it through to the next round if they pick up another booking.

Goalscorer odds

Willian loves scoring beautiful free kicks against Kiev. He’s scored two almost identical screamers in his last two appearances against the Ukrainians.

If you’re backing him to score again, he’s 7/1 to open the scoring. Both times he’s scored, it’s been the second Chelsea goal against Kiev, so he’s 3/1 to score anytime.

Olivier Giroud’s five game Europa League scoring streak came to an end in the home tie, but he still loves a goal in this competition. He’s a 4/1 favourite to open the scoring, or a 17/10 favourite to score anytime.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has scored in his last two appearances in the competition. He’s 12/5 to bag another anytime.

If Dynamo Kiev are to get anything from this game and stand a chance of turning the tie on its head, they’ll need an early goal to rattle Chelsea.

Viktor Tsyhankov is the favourite to open the scoring for the Ukrainian side at 7/1, with Verbic sat at 17/2 to break the deadlock.

They’re 3/1 and 7/2 to score anytime respectively.
