Aston Villa v Brighton betting tips and odds

Steven Gerrard starts his reign as Aston Villa manager with a home game against Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

Gerrard left his role as head coach at Rangers last weekend to replace Dean Smith, who was sacked after a run of five successive defeats.

The Liverpool legend is 29/20 to get off to a winning start but let’s look at some of the other odds in our Aston Villa v Brighton betting tips.

Match Odds

Villa begin the game in 16th place, just two points clear of the bottom three, so Gerrard needs to start turning things around before they get embroiled in a relegation scrap.

Seventh-placed Brighton are one of only three teams yet to lose on the road this season and can be backed at 19/10 to win or 9/4 to draw as they have in their last four away games in all competitions.

The Seagulls have also shared the spoils in five of their last six matches overall, including a 2-2 draw at Liverpool where they trailed by two goals inside 25 minutes.

A draw with goals at both ends, which has been the case in their last three matches, is 16/5, while a goal in both halves and the points to be split is 11/2 in our Aston Villa v Brighton betting tips.

Interestingly, Brighton have the joint best second-half record away from home (W4 D1 L0) and are available at 5/2 to win a fifth.

Three of the last four meetings between these clubs have produced goals at both ends, so we go 4/5 on both teams to score.

Talking Tactics

Seagulls boss Graham Potter went with his usual 4-2-3-1 in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle during which goalkeeper Roberto Sanchez was sent off for a professional foul on Callum Wilson in stoppage time.

With all three substitutes used, defender Lewis Dunk had to see out the game between the sticks, but Jason Steele is likely to be in goal on Saturday.

Leandro Trossard has assumed the main striker role for Brighton, with Neal Maupay on the bench for the last two games.

Smith also lined his Villa side up in a 4-2-3-1 for the 1-0 defeat at Southampton last time out, but Gerrard generally prefers a 4-3-3.

Goalscorer Odds

Trossard is 7/1 to get the ball rolling as he did against the Magpies and 14/5 to get on the scoresheet just like in his last two games.

Shane Duffy was on target for Republic of Ireland in the 3-0 win in Luxembourg and is available at 18/1 to score the opener again or 7/1 to find the net, while Enock Mwepu is 12/1 and 5/1 in the two markets, although there are concerns over his fitness.

Ollie Watkins is the 6/1 favourite from the Villa crew to break the deadlock or 5/2 to score, but the dangerous Anwar El Ghazi looks interesting at 7/1 and 3/1.

Emi Buendia, John McGinn and Leon Bailey are 10/1, 9/1 and 17/2 to draw first blood or 5/1, 7/2 and 7/2 respectively to score in our Aston Villa v Brighton betting tips.
