Cardiff’s survival prospects boosted by signing of Arsenal target

Cardiff are readying an audacious bid to land Toulouse all-rounder, Etienne Capoue, who has been a target for Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool in the past.

Malky Mackay, who has suffered a string of setbacks in his attempts to attract top talent to the Welsh capital – most notably with his failure to land Tom Ince – has tabled an offer in the region of £10m for the Frenchman as he looks to liven up his midfield.

He stands a good chance of getting his man too as rumour has it the 25-year-old is keen to test himself in the Premier League.

Capoue’s skill in possession of the ball makes it understandable why a host of England’s elite clubs were keen on his signature, while his ability to anchor the midfield is another valuable commodity in the top flight.

At present, the Bluebirds are lacking in this department with no specialist holding midfielder in their ranks. Creative players like Jordan Mutch and Peter Whittingham are likely to have a big part to play if the Welsh club are to prosper in the Premier League, but a player of Capoue’s defensive qualities are equally essential.

Last season saw the French international add another facet to his game too; he started scoring goals to supplement his already recognised talents.

In his 34 appearances for Toulouse he bagged seven goals in addition to three assists. This haul doubled his club career total, while it almost doubled his assist tally as well.

If Cardiff were to get their hands on a player who makes such a strong claim to be the complete midfielder, the reported transfer fee could prove to be quite the bargain.

At present, the Bluebirds are rated as 13/10 third favourites for relegation this season, but Capoue’s potential arrival is one that is certain to detract value from the price.
