Carlton House in to 6/4 in Derby betting after Dante romp

Published:

Carlton House has been made the 6/4 favourite to win the Derby next month following a stylish victory in the Dante Stakes at York.

The Dante is regularly seen as a good yardstick for the Derby, with North Light, Motivator and Authorized all completing the double in the same season since 2004.

And Michael Stoute’s three-year-old made fairly routine work of the trial, being eased to the front by Ryan Moore in the final furlong to secure victory from Seville without ever really being asked to extend.

This has seen his price in the Derby odds cut from 4/1 to 6/4, while Seville remains unchanged at 7/1, which could certainly represent good each-way value as Workforce was beaten in the Dante last year before going on to win the Classic at Epsom.

World Domination was the third horse running in the Dante that was well fancied for the Derby, but his odds for Epsom have now slumped from 4/1 to 20/1 on the back of a disappointing performance at York.

The horse seemed to find nothing as the pace quickened and if trainer Henry Cecil now wants to seriously win the Derby, he may have to consider whether he is forced to step stable star Frankel up in trip.

Frankel blitzed to victory in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket last month, but it is widely believed that the 1m4f trip of the Derby may be too much of an ask on Frankel’s stamina.

The Dante result has also had an impact on the Derby betting for horses not running at York, most notably on Aidan O’Brien’s Recital, who has been cut to 7/1 following the below-par display of World Domination.

A £30 stake on Recital winning the Derby would return £210. New customers can sign up here for a free £30 bet.
