Carlton House to get measure of revenge in Irish Derby
Published:Aidan O’Brien may have saddled the last five winners of the Irish Derby, but Carlton House can gain a small measure of redemption for his failure at Epsom with victory at the Curragh.
Seven of the last ten winners of the Irish Derby had also ran at Epsom in the same season and this brings in five of the eight runners this year.
Carlton House could only finish third behind Pour Moi at Epsom, but the fact he lost a shoe and had to run wide for the most part of the race are excuses that have been given as to why he was a beaten favourite.
In a smaller field, Ryan Moore is unlikely to make the same mistakes again and Carlton House’s odds of 5/4 look reasonable that he will make amends to become the first British-based winner of the race since 1994.
The one big doubt over Carlton House is whether he truly stayed 1m4f in the Derby and with the ground said to be soft at the Curragh, this will put an extra burden on his stamina.
O’Brien runs four horses in a bid to maintain his fine record in the Irish Derby and one of these is Epsom runner-up Treasure Beach.
Treasure Beach was only just collared on the line by Pour Moi in the Derby, is certain to stay the trip and has had his credentials franked by Nathaniel’s comfortably recent victory at Royal Ascot in the King Edward VII Stakes.
He is the obvious challenger to Carlton House and 3/1 in the Irish Derby odds to achieve victory.
Seville both ran disappointingly at Epsom, but could potentially come on for the run and is 11/2, while Native Khan was perhaps sent in pursuit of the leaders too early and if he is more patiently ridden could represent the each-way value at 10/1.
