Cleverley keen to start for Wigan to put one over on Manchester City

Tom Cleverley wants an immediate chance of appealing to Manchester United fans by playing a pivotal role in a Wigan win over Manchester City in the next round of Premier League fixtures.

Sir Alex Ferguson allowed Cleverley to gain some first-team Premier League experience by joining Wigan on loan during the recent transfer window.

He made his debut for Wigan when coming on for the final 20 minutes in the 1-1 draw at Sunderland and is now hoping to secure a first start for the visit of Manchester City to the DW Stadium.

The 21-year-old midfielder said: “Obviously I’d love to get one over United’s rivals on Sunday, if I’m selected. It’s games like this that I came to Wigan to play, and hopefully we can do something against them.

“My focus now is getting a good week of training under my belt and proving to the gaffer I deserve a place on the pitch against City.”

Wigan remain among the favourites to suffer relegation from the Premier League this season at 10/11, despite taking four points from their last two games.

They are 4/1 to pick up the win over Manchester City and 5/2 to stretch their unbeaten run to three games by claiming a draw.

Wigan have also not lost at home to Manchester City in all of the last five seasons since debuting in the Premier League and have won on three of these occasions.

Furthermore, City will arrive having just returned from a Europa League game in Austria against Red Bull Salzburg.
