Lightning to strike twice for Stuart Broad and NZ in Lord’s one-dayer

England cricket fans will hope that there are many more to come of course, but for now the moment of their summer was provided by Stuart Broad.

Although the Nottinghamshire star is still attracting criticism for his form with the bat, his stunning Test-best figures of 7-44 from 11 overs with the ball on the fourth day of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s completely washed away any lingering fears England had of being frustrated.

Now entering the 50-over format of the game, Broad will hope that the Home Of Cricket will again provide him with inspiration.

There are changes to England’s squad ahead of a series which will act as a warm-up for the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy, where they will be hosts.

The likes of Ravi Bopara, Jos Buttler and Eoin Morgan have been added to the One Day squad in place of Test players such as Nick Compton and Matt Prior, but Broad will again be a key figure.

The lanky paceman has taken at least two wickets on four of his last five ODI appearances at Lord’s, and so the 11/10 on offer for him to claim over 1.5 Kiwi victims in the first of the three-match series on Friday should certainly tempt.

Having taken 16 wickets in his 11 Lord’s ODI appearances, Broad is 6/4 to take more dismissals than his teammate James Anderson against New Zealand, a price to be taken seriously given that Anderson has surprisingly emerged wicketless from five of his last six 50-over internationals at Lord’s.

Those backing Broad with even more confidence might be drawn to the 12/1 on offer for him to be named man of the match, just as he was in that first Test he’ll always remember.
