Cure for travel sickness boosts Elgin City’s title claims

From Elgin City’s first eight away games in Ladbrokes League 2 this season, they picked up just four points. Contrast that to the nine they have picked up from their last three, and it’s easy to see why their title odds continue to shorten.
Jim Weir’s side were becoming a bit of a home ground bully early on in the campaign, picking up 19 of their first 23 points at Borough Briggs.
That has all changed though, with their come-from-behind victory against Arbroath making it three in a row on their travels.
That turnaround now means they have won four and drawn one of their last five league fixtures home or away, and sit top of the pile, four points ahead of their nearest pursuer.
Despite their current lofty position, The Black and Whites still have two teams above them in the betting, though have been cut from 7/2 to 3/1 shots after their latest victory.
It wasn’t always looking like they would be extending their advantage on Saturday though, as they had to show game determination to come back from 2-1 down against an in-from Arbroath side.
First a Craig Gunn penalty brought them level, before Dylan Easton struck in the 77th minute to steal the points for last year’s seventh-placed finishers.
Such has been their penchant for struggling away from home, their trio of wins on the road is the first time they have taken maximum points from three straight away games in over five years.
Their second goalscorer at Gayfield, Gunn, was himself extending his lead at the top of one particular table.
His strike from 12 yards out was his 15th of the season, and puts him one clear of East Fife’s Nathan Austin.
That, in turn, meant the odds on him claiming League 2’s Golden Boot went from 5/4 to 6/5.
Keep that up, and not only could it mean his Elgin side could be playing in the League 1 next term, but rumours of interest from elsewhere are ramped up further.
It has been reported that English League Two side Northampton Town are interested in prising the 28-year-old away from Elgin.
Whether City will split with their top goalscorer for four the last six seasons remains to be seen, but keeping him could make all the difference in their push for a third tier spot for the first time in their history.
