Premier League darts tips: Van Gerwen the man to beat

| 19.05.2021

The Premier League heads into the final week with the race to make it to play-off night as intense as ever.

Michael van Gerwen sits pretty at the top of the standings, two points clear of debutant Dimitri van den Bergh, but the five-time champion is not yet guaranteed a place in the top four.

The world number one is unsurprisingly the 6/4 favourite to clinch his sixth Premier League crown and appears to be finding his best form.

We take a look at four players who could contend for the title on play-off night to help you pick out the best Premier League darts tips.

Michael van Gerwen

Van Gerwen will be determined to reach the play-offs having missed out for the first time last season.

Commanding wins over Van den Bergh, Jonny Clayton and James Wade in his last three matches mean the Green Machine will head into the final four group matches with momentum on his side.

But the three-time world champion has not been imperious in this season’s Premier League, suffering chastening defeats to Wade and Clayton. That will give hope to the rest of the league that the favourite can be toppled.

Jose de Sousa

The debutant has had a year to remember. De Sousa won his maiden major title at the 2020 Grand Slam of Darts which helped secure him a Premier League place.

The 47-year-old Portuguese has more than held his own and sits fourth in the table, level on points with fifth-placed Clayton and only three behind leader Van Gerwen. He is available at 6/1 to be champion on May 28.

Jose de Sousa

De Sousa has proved a tough man to beat, losing just three times and heads into the final week on a four-game unbeaten run.

It could be argued that he has thrived in the behind-closed-doors environment over the last 12 months but, with the crowds set to return from the next night of action, De Sousa’s relative lack of big-stage experience might become a factor.

Nathan Aspinall

Aspinall finished as Premier League runner-up in his debut season in 2020 and is well placed to make it to the final four again this year.

The 2019 UK Open winner has, however, slipped off top spot after back-to-back defeats to Van den Bergh and Clayton, and will need to turn his form around if he is to secure a play-off spot.

The 29-year-old from Stockport is only 13/2 fifth favourite for the title despite being in second spot and he has proved his mettle on the big stage in the past.

Gary Anderson

The Flying Scotsman was riled by being priced as high as 40/1 to win the Premier League before he strung together back-to-back wins over Peter Wright and Van den Bergh.

The two-time world and Premier League champion is capable of beating anyone when he clicks and admits he is fired up by being underestimated.

He heads into the final week in good form and just two points off the play-off places. He is 16/1 to win a third Premier League.
