Day’s US PGA favouritism shows the scale of Australian’s form

Jason Day leads the US PGA Championship by two shots heading into the final round at Whistling Straits, with the year’s most in-form major player hot on his heels.

A third-round 66 was enough to give Day a small advantage over Jordan Spieth and hand the 27-year-old Ladbrokes’ favourites tag at a price of 11/8.

Spieth’s storming back nine, which he played in six-under-par, helped the US Masters and US Open champion card a seven-under 65 and position the youngster in contention to claim a third major tournament of the season.

The bookmaker makes the 22-year-old a 7/4 chance to claim victory in Wisconsin and the surge he showed on the way back to the clubhouse on Saturday makes him a threatening prospect for Day.

Queensland’s finest has been a consistent major performer during his career, without ever claiming a title, and will have had few chances as good as this to break his duck.

Improving on the three runners’ up spots he’s claimed during his time as a professional will be a very real possibility for Day, but behind him sit a raft of major winners looking to add to their tallies.

Aside from Spieth, arguably the most dangerous golfer in the world at the moment, lies Justin Rose and Martin Kaymer.

Rose sits at 12-under, along with South African Branden Grace, having carded a 68 on the third day. The Englishman is given a 6/1 chance of winning by Ladbrokes, with Kaymer, who won this tournament the last time it was held at Whistling Straits, at 16/1 and 11-under-par.
