Dundee v Celtic: Hoops to capitalise on hosts’ recent wobble

Published:

No side has summed up ‘inconsistency’ quite like Dundee this season. And with a good run of results ended by back-to-back defeats in the past fortnight, they’re likely to find it tough to get up off the canvas against this hugely talented Celtic side.

The Hoops may have dropped two points against Rangers at Parkhead last weekend, but that result was very much the exception to the rule. Before that game, Brendan Rodgers’ men had won 23 successive games in the Ladbrokes Premiership – and normal service will be resumed here.

After all, the Hoops played some of the best football of an incredible campaign in the past six weeks, including a stunning 6-0 demolition of Inverness Caledonian Thistle and a haul of four goals in an electric 21 minutes against St Mirren last weekend.

The head-to-head record between this pair also points to a Celtic victory. Dundee haven’t beaten the Glasgow giants since March 2001, and of the last 18 meetings at Dens Park, Celtic have won 14, drawing four.

That supremacy is reflected in the odds of 1/5 for the Bhoys to win, with 14/1 for a Dark Blues’ victory and 11/2 on offer for the draw.

However, with only modest wins available for the visitors to simply win, the best value is elsewhere.

First off, Stuart Armstrong looks well priced to score anytime at Evens. The 24-year-old has reached double figures in the Premiership this season, and netted the opener against Rangers last time out.

Meanwhile, having failed to score in each of their last two games, Dundee look unlikely to break that duck on Sunday – so the 4/5 for Celtic to win to nil looks like something of a banker. Especially so as they’ve managed 11 clean sheets in the last 15 games.

However, it could take until the second half for the visitors to break the deadlock. The Hoops have scored just one first-half goal against the Dee in the last four meetings, so the 16/5 for Half Time/Full Time: Draw/Celtic looks like excellent value.
