The earliest title wins in Premier League history

With Liverpool edging closer to wrapping things up, Ladbrokes looks at the earliest title wins in the history of the Premier League.
Premier League winners history
Arsenal delayed Liverpool's celebration for another few days at least with a 4-0 win at Ipswich, but after Trent Alexander-Arnold's late winner against relegated Leicester, Arne Slot's men are guaranteed to win the title if they beat Tottenham on Sunday.
The Reds will also be crowned champions if the Gunners are beaten at home to Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
But how would Liverpool being crowned champions with four games to play compare to the earliest a side has won it? Ladbrokes looks at the teams who have secured the title with the most games left of the season to play.
Earliest Premier League title winners
Liverpool 2019-20 - Seven games to spare
Although technically the latest a team has won the league having secured the title in June due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Liverpool's title win with seven games to spare is comfortably the earliest in terms of matches to spare.
Prior to the season being paused in March, Jurgen Klopp's men had extraordinarily won 27 of their 29 games, ending the season an impressive 99 points - one off the record set by Manchester City in 2017-18.
Liverpool finally secured their status as champions when Man City lost to Chelsea in late June, with the Reds lifting the trophy inside an empty Anfield to sum up what was a strange campaign overall.
Manchester City 2017-18 - Five games to spare
Arguably one of the greatest title-winning team, Pep Guardiola's City side of 2017-18 secured the Premier League title in ruthless style, amassing 100 points and leaving most teams in their wake with their exciting brand of attacking football.
Rivals Manchester United's defeat to West Brom with five games to spare secured the title at a canter for the Citizens.
They ended up finishing a huge 19 points over the Red Devils in what is the highest gap between first and second in Premier League history - though Jose Mourinho still calls that second-placed finish at Old Trafford that season one of his greatest achievements.
Manchester United 2000-01 - Five games to spare
Undoubtedly what is a better achievement for United is their dominant 2000-01 campaign, which was the first time a team has won the title with five games to spare.
A 4-2 win over Coventry put them on the verge of becoming champions for the 13th time, and sixth in the Premier League era, with a win for Middlesbrough over second-placed Arsenal later in the day getting them over the line.
The title victory was met with little fanfare, however, with United preparing for a Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich a few days later. Captain Roy Keane said: “I’m not really bothered to be honest – we’re just thinking about Wednesday.” Oh how United would love to be in that position nowadays.
Arsenal 2003-04 - Four games to spare
Arsenal's team of 2003-04 will have something to say about who are the greatest ever champions, with Arsene Wenger's side still the only to go a whole season unbeaten.
Nickname the 'Invincibles', the game in which they secured the title was also one of the most memorable, having clinched glory at the home of rivals Tottenham following a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane.
It is set to remain the last time the Gunners have won the Premier League after falling well behind Liverpool this season, though they are still battling to win the Champions League after hammering Real Madrid to reach the semi-finals.
Manchester United 1999-00 - Four games to spare
United were also the first team to secure the title with four games to spare, winning the title by beating Southampton 2-1 on April 2, 2000 despite a disappointing Champions League exit a few days before.
Finishing the season on 91 points, Sir Alex Ferguson's side's 18-point margin over Arsenal was a record until City's 2017-18 triumph.
Manchester United 2012-13 - Four games to spare
The Red Devils also wrapped up the title four games early in 2012-13 in what was the last of Ferguson's reign - and the most recent for the club overall after more than a decade of turmoil since the legendary Scot's departure.
Robin van Persie, signed the previous summer from Arsenal, scored a stunning hat-trick against Aston Villa including one of the competition's greatest ever volleys at Old Trafford to confirm their superiority and a 20th title triumph for the Premier League giants.
Ladbrokes has also looked at when Liverpool are expected to win the Premier League this season, with the game against Arsenal's closest rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, seeming most probable.
