English sides in Europe: Premier League clubs' route to the finals
Published:
With the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League semi-finalists now decided, Ladbrokes looks at how the English sides are doing in Europe and assesses the routes Premier League teams must take to reach the final.
Arsenal thumped Real Madrid to reach the Champions League semi-finals, with Tottenham and Manchester United also reaching the final four in the Europa League.
Chelsea are also a game away from the Conference League final, with Aston Villa the only English side to crash out of Europe despite a valiant effort against Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League quarter-final.
Ladbrokes looks at the routes Premier League sides must take to reach the final.
Champions League: How Arsenal can reach the final
Arsenal
Semi-final vs PSG
- First leg (Emirates): April 23
- Second leg (Parc des Princes): May 7
Arsenal are appearing in the Champions League semi-finals for just the third time in their history after a superb 5-1 aggregate victory over Real, backing up their 3-0 victory at the Emirates with an assured 2-1 win at the Bernabeu.
PSG, who survived an almighty scare in the quarter-finals against Villa, now await Mikel Arteta's side, who are now second favourites to deliver their first ever Champions League title behind Barcelona.
Should they make it to only their second ever Champions League final in Munich, they will likely face either Barcelona or Inter Milan, who progressed past Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich in their quarter-finals.
Europa League: How Manchester United and Tottenham can reach the final
Tottenham
Semi-final vs Bodo/Glimt
- First leg (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium): May 1
- Second leg (Aspmyra Stadion): May 8
Despite languishing down in 16th in the Premier League, Tottenham's season is still alive after getting the better of Eintracht Frankfurt over two legs in the quarter-finals.
Ange Postecoglou's future could well depend on success in this tournament, with a tie against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt their next challenge after their shock win over Lazio.
If Spurs, who are the favourites to win the tournament, make it through, then an all-English final against Man Utd is still on the cards with the lure of potential Champions League qualification a big draw for both of the Premier League strugglers.
Manchester United
Semi-final vs Athletic Bilbao
- First leg (Estadio San Mames): May 1
- Second leg (Old Trafford): May 8
Much like Tottenham, United's whole season rests on success in the Europa League and they kept their campaign alive in the most dramatic of circumstances with a stunning late comeback to beat Lyon 7-6 on aggregate, with Harry Maguire netting the winner at the death.
The Red Devils must now get the better of Athletic Bilbao, who will have plenty of incentive to stop Rubem Amorim's side with the prospect of a final in their own stadium on the line with Estadio San Mames hosting the showpiece.
Conference League: Chelsea's route to the final
Semi-final vs Djurgarden
- First leg (3Arena): May 1
- Second leg (Stamford Bridge): May 8
Chelsea's status as overwhelming Conference League favourites is in tact despite making hard work of their quarter-final tie with Legia Warsaw, after a 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge still saw them progress 4-2 on aggregate.
The Blues have another favourable tie against Djurgarden, currently 12th in the Swedish league, in the semi-finals as they look to become the first club to complete the set of European titles.
Reaching the final should not be an issue for Enzo Maresca's men but some potentially tough opponents could stand in their way in the final, namely LaLiga high-fliers Real Betis or two-time finalists Fiorentina.
Despite being the favourites, Ladbrokes have looked at why Chelsea might not be the smart bet for the Conference League.
