Federer serving up value as ATP World Tour Finals winner
Published:Roger Federer currently finds himself having to bat away more retirement rumours than any tennis balls but the former World no.1 still looks a worthy shout to win the ATP World Tour Finals.
The 32-year-old is currently available at 9/1 to claim victory in London this month, with the price reflective of an indifferent season for the former world beater with just a single Grand Slam semi-final appearance, in Australia, to show for the year.
But any idea that the seven-time Wimbledon winner is finished with life at the top table of men’s tennis could be shown up as foolish with Federer boasting a fine record at the end-of-year event.
To date, the Swiss no.1 has accumulated an impressive six ATP World Tour Finals titles, with the most recent of these coming just two years ago.
He was unlucky to miss out on a seventh victory last year, losing to Novak Djokovic in a tight contest played out in the familiar surroundings of the O2 Arena.
The Serb remains the current favourite to retain the title, with odds of 6/5 on offer, but it would be foolish to underestimate Federer given his fine record of success at the London location.
In the four finals taking place at the venue, the Swiss right-hander has won twice, beating 2/1 second-favourite Rafael Nadal on one of those occasions.
And while the likes of Djokovic and his Spanish rival tend to save their best tennis for the four Grand Slam competitions, Federer’s consistency ensures he will put in a commendable shift.
He’s certainly been in solid form in recent weeks, reaching the final of the Swiss Indoors Basel tournament.
And after beating Juan Martin del Potro, who is available at 6/1, at the BNP Paribas Masters you wouldn’t put it past arguably the greatest player in the of the modern era putting on one more show in London.
