Flying Fish lays down US Open marker with win in Atlanta
Published:Mardy Fish has emerged as a dark horse to win the US Open after winning his second successive ATP Tour title at the Atlanta Tennis Championships.
Fish overcame fellow American John Isner 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7-4) in the final, to follow in fine style his victory at the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport.
Fish is 100/1 to win his maiden Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows, and the 28-year-old is currently revelling in a 10-match winning streak.
And having beaten old friend and favourite for the Atlanta crown, Andy Roddick, in the semi-finals, Fish has shown that he is capable of defeating the world’s finest players.
A 14/1 contender to win the US Open himself, Roddick was a major scalp for Fish, as was Isner, whose odds of 66/1 suggest that the 6ft 9in big may have an outside chance in New York.
As well as becoming the last American to win the US Open in 2003, Roddick was also the last man to win a Grand Slam in his home country, and Fish will be hoping to fan the American flames at Flushing Meadows this year.
World number one Rafael Nadal is the 5/2 favourite to claim his first US Open crown, while Roger Federer is priced at 11/4 to clinch a historic sixth win in New York.
Having reached the final in 2008, British hope Andy Murray is available at 7/2 to finally win his first Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows.
