Chelsea history

Chelsea FC was founded by Gus Mears in 1905 at the Rising Sun pub, now known as the Butcher’s Hook, on Fulham Road.

The Blues’ most successful period came at the turn of the 21st century when the club was bought by Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, winning the Champions League twice and the Premier League five times in his 19 years in charge.

However, success eluded Chelsea until the 1954-55 season when they won the league title for the first time and 10 years later added the League Cup with a two-legged victory over Leicester.

Chelsea won the FA Cup for the first time in 1970 when they beat Leeds 2-1 in a replay at Old Trafford after they had drawn 2-2 at Wembley almost three weeks earlier.

But everything changed when billionaire Abramovich bought the club off Ken Bates for £60million in June 2003.

Jose Mourinho won back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006, plus the FA Cup in the following year, but the Portuguese was sacked at the start of the 2007-08 season.

His replacement Avram Grant led them to a first Champions League final which they lost to Manchester United on penalties and Carlo Ancelotti won the Premier League and FA Cup double in 2009-10.

Two years later Roberto di Matteo won the Champions League in a penalty shoot-out against Bayern Munich and a year later they won the Europa League.

Mourinho came and went again with another Premier League title under his belt and success continued to come under Antonio Conte, who steered Chelsea to a sixth top-flight triumph and the FA Cup in the following season.

Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard and captured a second Champions League title with a 1-0 victory over Manchester City, but the club was thrown into turmoil with the war in Ukraine which saw Abramovich sell the club to American businessman Todd Boehly.
