Morecambe v Newport betting tips: Exiles underdogs at Wembley

Michael Flynn Newport

Newport will hope to continue their recent run of good form against play-off final rivals Morecambe with a place in League One at stake.

The Exiles have triumphed in their three most recent meetings, including both games in the 2020-1 season, and are priced at 31/20 to triumph whereas Morecambe are available at 15/8.

With the Shrimps finishing the regular season fourth, one place above their final opponents, things look fairly even ahead of the Wembley showpiece so let’s take a look at some of the odds to help with your Morecambe v Newport betting tips.

Match Odds

Both Derek Adams and Michael Flynn have had fine seasons with Morecambe and Newport respectively and they continued their success in the play-off semi-finals.

The Shrimps triumphed over Tranmere, whereas Newport edged Forest Green 5-4 after the second leg went to extra-time and the final could well go beyond 90 minutes before promotion is confirmed.

Morecambe are favoured to win and both teams to score at 9/2 and Newport are priced at 4/1 to take the honours in the BTTS market. Morecambe are 18/5 to win the tie to nil and Newport are the outsiders at 3/1 to win and keep their opponents scoreless.

Newport have certainly had the better of recent meetings having triumphed 2-1 and 3-1 in their two meetings this season.

The last time Morceambe beat the Exiles was in December 2019 when they won 2-1 and a repeat is  9/1. Newport to win by the same scoreline is priced at 8/1.

Newport are 16/5 to lead at the end of both halves as they did in Lancashire, while both teams scored in the first half  in this season’s meetings and that option is available at 17/4.

Talking Tactics

Adams plumped for a 4-1-4-1 formation in the semi-final second leg as Aaron Wildig’s early penalty saw them on the way to a 1-1 draw and a 3-2 aggregate success against Tranmere.

Cole Stockton played as a lone striker in the second leg but Adams has options if he wants to adopt an attacking strategy in the final with the likes of A-Jay Leitch-Smith on the bench against Rovers.

Flynn favoured 3-5-2 in the second leg against Forest Green which saw a 2-0 aggregate lead wiped out before veteran Kevin Ellison sparked a revival as the Exiles triumphed 5-4 on aggregate thanks to Nicky Maynard’s extra-time goal.

Goalscorer Odds

Ellison perhaps has more reason than most to score again in the final after being frozen out by Adams at the end of a long and prolific Morecambe career.

Ellison scored in the most recent league victory over Morecambe and is 7/1 to score first in the game with team-mates Padraig Amond 4/1 and Maynard 5/1.

Stockton is the favourite among the Morecambe players to break the deadlock at 9/2 and Leitch-Smith 7/1.

Winger Carlos Gomes, who has two more goals than Stockton this season, is priced at 5/1.
