Netherlands v Ukraine betting tips: Dutch back on big stage

Georginio Wijnaldum Netherlands

Netherlands are back on the international stage after a five-year absence and they start the tournament as 11/1 outsiders to repeat their 1988 success.

They face a tricky opening test against Ukraine. who finished ahead of Portugal in Euro 2020 qualifying, but Frank de Boer’s side are 4/7 to get off to a winning start despite the absence of Virgil van Dijk.

Hopefully, we should see a sea of orange in Amsterdam as we look at some of the odds for our Netherlands v Ukraine betting tips.

Match Odds

The Oranje were involved in a couple of thrilling encounters with Germany in qualifying, fighting back from two goals down only to concede a last-minute winner in a 3-2 home defeat before gaining revenge with a 4-2 victory in Hamburg.

Netherlands were also beaten 4-2 by Turkey in a World Cup qualifier and with Van Dijk unavailable through injury we could see goals in Amsterdam.

Over 2.5 goals has paid out in four of their last five competitive matches and that option is available at 11/10 while both teams to score is 23/20.

That would have paid out in five of their last seven matches having expectedly kept clean sheets against Latvia and Gibraltar.

Ukraine drew 1-1 in all three of their recent World Cup qualifiers which included a creditable point against world champions France, so we go 11/4 on a share of the spoils, 17/4 with both teams scoring or 6/1 on a repeat of that scoreline.

The Ukrainians lost all three group games at the last European Championship and failed to qualify for the World Cup but they took four points off Portugal in qualifying for Euro 2020 and can be backed at 11/2 to beat the Dutch.

Talking Tactics

Lyon striker Memphis Depay, who has been linked with a move to Barcelona, will be the focal point of Netherlands’ attack with Georginio Wijnaldum playing in a more advanced role than the one he is used to at Liverpool.

De Boer likes to play a 4-2-3-1 formation with Frenkie de Jong sitting in front of the back four and Wijnaldum just behind Depay.

However, De Boer has injury concerns about Matthis de Ligt who missed the warm-up against Georgia with a groin issue, while Daley Blind is also doubtful.

Andriy Shevchenko deployed a 4-3-3 for the draw in Paris, with Manchester City left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko operating on the left side of midfield, but the main man is striker Roman Yaremchuk.

Goalscorer Odds

Depay is the 14/5 favourite to get the ball rolling and 6/4 to score any time having bagged six of Netherlands’ 24 goals but their top scorer with eight was Wijnaldum who is 15/2 and 7/2 in the same markets.

Gent striker Yaremchuk was Ukraine’s leading marksman with just four but he scored against Germany in a 3-1 Nations League defeat and with six goals in 19 appearances for his country, he is available at 17/2 and 4/1, just like Andriy Yarmolenko and Artem Besedin.
