Newcastle v Chelsea betting tips and odds

Premier League leaders Chelsea head to the north east as 4/11 favourites to beat a Newcastle side still chasing their first top-flight win of the season.

Callum Wilson’s overhead kick at Crystal Palace last weekend ensured Graeme Jones’ first game in temporary charge since the departure of Steve Bruce did not end on a losing note.

The Blues advanced to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup during the week but will be hoping for an easier time of it against the Magpies as we look at some of the markets in our Newcastle v Chelsea betting tips.

Match Odds

The absence of injured strikers Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner had very little effect on Chelsea last weekend when Mason Mount scored a hat-trick in a 7-0 thrashing of Norwich which kept them one point clear of Liverpool at the top of the table.

Thomas Tuchel also had to make three late changes to the side that beat Southampton on penalties on Tuesday night when Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen and Ruben Loftus-Cheek were ruled out but he still had the likes of Mount, Ben Chilwell, Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva and Jorginho on the bench.

Most of those players are expected to return for the game at St James’ Park, where the Blues are 6/5 to win to nil as they did home and away last season.

Chelsea have kept the joint-highest number of clean sheets this season (six) while United have been breached in all nine matches.

That said, the Magpies have scored and conceded in their last seven so we go evens on goals at both ends or 21/10 on the visitors to win without keeping a clean sheet in our Newcastle v Chelsea betting tips.

The west Londoners have won five of the last six meetings with Newcastle, all of which produced three goals or fewer and a win by that method is available at 11/10.

Chelsea won both matches 2-0 last season and are 11/2 to prevail by that scoreline again while a 2-1 victory is 15/2.

Talking Tactics

Azpilicueta is expected to recover from a shoulder injury in time and Christensen is set to return to training later this week following dental surgery.

Loftus-Cheek missed Tuesday’s game with a hip problem, so Tuchel has some decisions to make for Saturday, but Callum Hudson-Odoi is likely to be in the starting line-up again in a 3-4-2-1 formation.

Jones went with a different formation and made a couple of changes to his line-up for the draw at Selhurst Park in a 5-3-2, with Allan Saint-Maximin and Wilson up front and Emil Krafth at the back while Joe Willock made way for Ryan Fraser.

Goalscorer Odds

Kai Havertz opened the scoring against Saints and is expected to lead the line on Saturday when the German can be backed at 7/2 to break the deadlock or 5/4 to find the net.

Mount is the same price as Havertz to grab the opening goal and 13/10 to get on the scoresheet in our Newcastle v Chelsea betting tips.

Chilwell has scored four goals in his last six appearances for club and country and is 10/1 and 7/2 in the two markets while Reece James is 14/1 and 9/2 having scored against Norwich.

Wilson is 13/2 and 23/10 from the Newcastle contingent while Saint-Maximin is 12/1 and 4/1 in the two options.
