Newcastle v Manchester City betting tips, odds and preview

The champions have made an ominous start to the new Premier League season but face a tricky test on Tyneside as we pick out some Newcastle v Manchester City betting tips.

City are already top of the table after just two matches with six points and six goals while they are also yet to concede.

The other team to keep two clean sheets, though, are Newcastle so City may not have things all their own way despite being 4/11 favourites for the win.

Newcastle v Man City form

The season could not have started much better for City, having enjoyed two routine wins while main title rivals Liverpool have been held to two draws.

Erling Haaland’s brace secured a 2-0 victory at West Ham and the Norwegian could even afford a quiet afternoon in a 4-0 win at home to Bournemouth last weekend.

Newcastle had to wait until December for their first clean sheet in the Premier League last season but they look a very different proposition under Eddie Howe, who has used the transfer funds he has had available wisely.

A 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest was followed by a goalless draw at Brighton and defensively they have improved massively, helped by some smart goalkeeping from new signing Nick Pope.

Since the January transfer window closed, the Magpies have only conceded four goals in nine matches at St James’ Park which has included visits from Liverpool and Arsenal.

Under 2.5 goals has paid out in five of the last six matches here so could be the way to go for Newcastle v Manchester City betting tips at 13/10.

Newcastle v Man City head to head

This weekend’s match will be a good test of just how much Newcastle have progressed under Howe given their dismal record in this fixture.

They lost both meetings last season by an aggregate score of 9-0 and have conceded 20 goals in the last five encounters.

City have not always been at their best at St James’ Park though.

Since Newcastle returned to the top flight in 2017, City have dropped points here in two of their five league visits while two of their three wins were by a one-goal margin.

It is a brave punter who opposes City but backing them to only win by one goal could be decent value at 27/10 in the Newcastle v Man City odds.

Newcastle v Man City team news

Newcastle are without midfielder Jonjo Shelvey but captain Jamaal Lascelles was back on the bench last week after a muscle problem and could feature, although Howe may be reluctant to change his defence.

City continue to be without Aymeric Laporte, who is recovering from knee surgery in the summer, while midfielders Kalvin Phillips and Cole Palmer could again miss out.

Goalscorer odds

Haaland had a much more difficult afternoon against Bournemouth than he did when bagging a brace at West Ham and will again be the centre of attention.

The £51million striker had just eight touches last weekend, although one of those was an assist for Ilkay Gundogan’s opener, but is the clear favourite to open the scoring at 21/10.

Haaland can also be backed at 13/5 to score at least twice again and is 3/4 to be on target in a City win.

Callum Wilson is Newcastle’s main attacking threat at 8/1 to score first and 13/5 to score at any time, having opened his account for the season against Forest.

Defender Joao Cancelo has scored in each of City’s last two trips to Tyneside and is 10/1 to do so again as the last of our Newcastle v Manchester City betting tips.
