Newcastle v Southampton betting tips: Magpies need to get off the mark

| 24.08.2021

Newcastle v Southampton preview and odds

There are fears that both of these teams could be scrapping for survival this season so we look at some Newcastle v Southampton betting tips ahead of what could prove an important meeting.

Newcastle are one of five Premier League teams yet to get off the mark after the first two rounds of fixtures so are under pressure to get a positive result at St James’ Park.

Southampton boosted their confidence by holding Manchester United to a draw last weekend and went goal crazy in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Match Odds

There was little to separate these teams last season and the odds suggest that could be the case again on Saturday.

Contrasting form at the end of the 2020/21 campaign allowed Newcastle to finish two points and three places above Southampton, despite spending most of the season below Saints in the table.

Newcastle lost 2-0 at St Mary’s in November but gained revenge with a 3-2 victory in February’s reverse fixture, with all the goals scored prior to the Magpies having Jeff Hendrick sent off in the 49th minute.

The hosts are slight favourites at 6/4 while Southampton are 7/4 for a first win on Tyneside since 2015.

They have lost on each of their last four visits here but scored in the previous three and another home win and both teams to score is an option for Newcastle v Southampton betting tips at 10/3.

Newcastle were held to a draw by Burnley in the Carabao Cup in midweek before going out on penalties and another draw after 90 minutes is priced at 12/5.

Talking Tactics

Southampton have scored the first goal in all three matches they have played this season and it could prove decisive if they can do so again here.

Saints took the lead at Everton but were beaten 3-1 and they had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Manchester United last weekend despite going ahead in the 30th minute.

It was a very different story in Wednesday night’s 8-0 thrashing of League Two side Newport and the frustration of the Toon Army could boil over if Saints can go ahead on Saturday.

Discontent at the club’s lack of transfer activity amid the ongoing takeover saga mounts by the day and Saints are 11/10 to score the first goal.

Saints to lead at half-time and fail to win, which has been the case in their first two league games, can be added to Newcastle v Southampton betting tips at 9/1.

Goalscorer Odds

Adam Armstrong is the replacement for Danny Ings at Southampton and got off to a fine start with his opener at Everton but missed two good chances to restore the lead against United.

The former Blackburn striker is 2/1 to be on target on Saturday while team-mate Che Adams to score and Southampton to win has been boosted to 4/1.

Newcastle forward Callum Wilson is the 7/2 favourite to score first while tricky winger Allan Saint-Maximin has been boosted to 5/1 to produce an assist and make amends for his penalty shoot-out miss against Burnley.
