Pereira leads way in next Everton manager odds

Vitor Pereira has emerged as the new 4/7 favourite in the next Everton manager odds to replace Rafael Benitez at Goodison Park.

The Spaniard was sacked after almost seven months in charge following a 2-1 defeat at Norwich, with Duncan Ferguson placed in temporary charge.

Pereira has enjoyed success in his native Portugal, Greece and China, but is currently out of work after leaving Fenerbahce in December.

Wayne Rooney, Ferguson and Frank Lampard are also in the mix, so let’s look at the main contenders for the Toffees vacancy.

Vitor Pereira

Pereira won the Portuguese title two seasons in a row with Porto between 2012-13 and is now the clear favourite to become Everton’s seventh permanent manager in six years.

The 53-year-old Portuguese spoke to the Merseysiders before the appointment of Carlo Ancelotto in 2019 but signed a new deal with Shanghai SIPG in China.

A title winner with Greek giants Olympiacos, Pereira is understood to have impressed Everton owner Farhad Mosiri during a recent interview.

Wayne Rooney

England and Manchester United’s leading goalscorer has endured a baptism of fire in his first managerial job at Derby and the temptation to return to his boyhood club could prove too strong to turn down should the call come.

Everton have prised managers away from Premier League rivals in the past – Ronald Koeman from Southampton and Marco Silva from Watford – but have not, however, gone down the route of hiring an up-and-coming manager with little experience.

Rooney has worked miracles with a threadbare squad at Derby, who would be challenging for a play-off spot had they not been deducted 21 points over the course of the season.

The Rams boss was the 7/4 favourite over the weekend but the emergence of Pereira as a serious contender has seen him drift to 9/2 in the next Everton manager odds.

Duncan Ferguson

Ferguson took temporary charge for the second time at the weekend, but a 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa means his odds of landing the post permanently have drifted from 5/2 to 5/1.

A much-loved figure during his playing days at Goodison Park, ‘Big Dunc’ scored 72 goals in 273 appearances for the Blues across two spells during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Since 2014, Ferguson has been on the first-team coaching staff at the club, and had a spell as caretaker manager following Marco Silva’s sacking in 2019, as well as being Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant.

Frank Lampard

Like Rooney, Lampard cut his teeth in management at Derby before being handed the reins at Chelsea, where he had enjoyed a distinguished playing career and is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

He held talks with Norwich after Daniel Farke was dismissed in November, before dropping out of the race for that job. The former Chelsea boss has been out of management for a year after being sacked last January.

Lampard took the Blues to the FA Cup final and into the Champions League and gained plaudits for developing young players like Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Reece James and Tammy Abraham during his spells in charge of Derby and Chelsea.

The former England midfielder can be backed at 5/1 in the next Everton manager odds.

Roberto Martinez

The Belgium boss initially led the betting for a return to club management following a five-year-plus stint on the international stage, with Barcelona having reportedly considered him as a candidate to replace Ronald Koeman.

The Spaniard has enhanced his reputation since his spells in English football with Swansea, Wigan and Everton, whom he led to a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League during his time in charge at Goodison Park.

Although Martinez would welcome a return to the club, he wants to lead Belgium at this year’s World Cup in Qatar and a job share has been ruled out by the Belgian FA, so the Spaniard is now 14/1 in the next Everton manager odds.

Fabio Cannavaro

The 2006 World Cup winner with Italy entered the running at 7/1 on Friday having reportedly been interviewed for the vacancy, but his odds have since gone out to 16/1.

The 48-year-old Italian’s coaching experience has been limited to spells in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and mainly China, so he perhaps lacks the experience of managing in Europe.

The legendary defender won La Liga twice with Real Madrid and was a Ballon d’Or winner in 2006 so his playing experience cannot be questioned.

Best of the rest

A bid for Brighton boss Graham Potter would be an audacious move by Everton, and it is far from certain that he would consider a switch to Goodison Park a step up for which he is 16/1, the same price as Nuno Espírito Santo and Paulo Fonseca.

Nuno has been out of work since being sacked by Tottenham at the end of October following a 3-0 defeat by Manchester United.

Former Roma boss Fonseca had been linked with the vacancy at Newcastle, but Eddie Howe landed the role in November.
