Swansea City’s record flop Borja Baston linked with Villarreal exit

Published:

It really hasn’t worked out for Swansea City and their record signing Borja Baston, but the uncomfortable alliance could be nearing an end, with Villarreal tipped to make a move.

Baston arrived in Wales last summer for a princely £15.5m from Atletico Madrid, with that fee the Swans’ biggest expenditure in the club’s history.

But after netting 18 times in La Liga on loan at Eibar last season, the 24-year-old striker has failed to make an impression at the Liberty Stadium, netting once from 13 Premier League appearances.

The Spaniard has been handed just 25 minutes of top-tier football under new boss Paul Clement, and it seems is days in Wales are numbered.

Fernando Llorente’s arrival in Wales, just two weeks after Baston’s arrival was also a blow, with the former Juventus man becoming the main striker in SA1.

It remains to be seen if Villarreal would prefer an inital loan deal, or go straight in for a permanent one.

But either way, Swansea will be keen to recoup much of that £15m outlay last summer.

And with the arrival of Jordan Ayew from Aston Villa imminent, Clement already has cover in offensive positions.

So while that all goes on behind the scenes, the Swans will be hoping to allay their relegation fears tonight.

Southampton make the hop over the border, but despite home advantage, we make the hosts 9/4 outsiders for victory this evening.
