Who is the best Premier League signing of the summer?

| 31.07.2018

Most of the Premier League clubs have been splashing the cash this summer to make sure they’re ready for the new campaign.

They’ve completed over £1bn worth of business between them and there have been plenty of big-money signings.

But there’s always a risk when you sign a new player. Will any of this summer’s arrivals have an instant impact like Mohamed Salah at Liverpool? We’ve looked at who’s got the best deal so far…

The big six buys

Liverpool have been big spenders this summer. Their most expensive addition is Alisson at £65m. He could be their most important signing too. If the Brazilian fixes Liverpool’s problems in goal, it’ll be money well spent.

The Reds have been let down by mistakes between the posts for far too long. Those errors often undo the good work of their attacking talents. They’re second-favourites for the title at 4/1. Bringing in a top-class goalkeeper could make all the difference.

Manchester City are 8/11 favourites. Their only major addition so far has been Riyad Mahrez for £60m.

The former Leicester City playmaker is one of the most creative players in the league. But will he add a new dimension to City’s play? It’s unlikely.

Jorginho will set the tempo and help Maurizio Sarri get his ideas across at Chelsea, while Fred may be the man to help free Paul Pogba at Manchester United. Both are smart signings, but not necessarily game-changers.

One player who could transform their side is Lucas Torreira. He looked like the defensive midfielder Arsenal have been crying out for at the World Cup.

The best of the rest

Away from the top six, West Ham United have caught the eye. Issa Diop, Felipe Anderson, Andriy Yarmolenko and Jack Wilshere could all be inspired additions.

Leicester’s £3m deal for Jonny Evans also looks to be a very canny signing, especially if Harry Maguire moves on.

Eyebrows were raised when Everton spent £40m on Richarlison too. He could be a bargain or a huge mistake, but we won’t know for a while.

Of the newly promoted sides, Fulham have arguably had the best window so far. Bringing in Jean Michael Seri is a genuine coup for a newly-promoted side. It’s only a year since he was on the verge of signing for Barcelona.

Wolves have snapped up the vastly experienced Joao Moutinho to bolster their ranks as well.

Who’s the star signing?

But who’s the best of the lot? In terms of who can take their side to the next level, we think Alisson could be top of the pile.

Liverpool will cause problems for any side going forward. Virgil van Dijk has addressed many of their defensive issues. They needed a goalkeeper to tie everything together and they’ve arguably got the best one on the market.
