Sheffield United v Burnley betting tips: Clarets favourites in Roses battle

Published:

Sheffield United’s two-year stay in the Premier League ends on Sunday afternoon with a low-key match against Burnley who have lost their last two games against Leeds and Liverpool by a 7-0 aggregate.

United lost their 29th game of a miserable season in a 1-0 defeat by Newcastle during the week and they are priced at 9/5 to avoid making it 30 against the Lancastrians, who are 7/5.

The Clarets have shown more enterprise at the tail end of the season, so let’s examine the odds for our Sheffield United v Burnley betting tips.

Match Odds

Burnley may have lost heavily against Leeds and Liverpool at Turf Moor but they had their chances and are seeking a third successive away win following 4-0 and 2-0 victories at Wolves and Fulham.

The Clarets are 15/4 to win to nil for a third time and 9/1 to repeat their 1-0 victory over the Blades at Turf Moor.

The previous Premier League meeting ended up as 1-1 a draw which can be backed at 6/1 or 5/2 for a simple share of the spoils.

The Yorkshiremen may have lost 29 games but 24 of those defeats have produced under 3.5 goals and 17 were by one-goal margins.

Burnley can be backed at 5/2 to win with three or fewer match goals or 18/5 to win by just one as they did at Turf Moor.

Finally in this section, the Blades have failed to score in 21 of their 37 games this season and are 27/10 to fire blanks once more.

Talking Tactics

Sean Dyche deployed a 4-4-1-1 formation for the defeat by the Reds, with Josh Brownhill playing the number 10 role behind main striker Chris Wood.

Matej Vydra boosted their attack in the second half and against limited opposition may get a start unless Dyche decides to give Ashley Barnes or Jay Rodriguez some game time on the final day.

Paul Heckingbottom used a 3-4-3 system at St James’ Park as he did in the 1-0 win at Everton, so is likely to stick with the same formation.

Goalscorer Odds

With Wood having scored eight goals in his last 10 games, it will come as no surprise to learn the New Zealand striker is the 14/5 favourite to grab the first goal and evens to get on the scoresheet.

Brownhill played in an advanced role during the week and is priced at 13/2 to score and 18/1 to break the deadlock while Vydra is 5/2 to find the net.

David McGoldrick is United’s top scorer this season with seven goals and is available at 4/1 to draw first blood as he did in the League Cup match against the Clarets in September or 13/8 to breach Burnley’s defence.
