Watford v Southampton betting tips and odds

Claudio Ranieri has had a mixed start to his reign as Watford boss but the overall mood is undoubtedly positive following last weekend’s astonishing 5-2 win at Everton.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl made nine changes for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Premier League leaders Chelsea, who eventually went through on penalties.

Saints are 5/4 favourites to win what promises to be an exciting encounter at Vicarage Road, so let’s look at some of the options in our Watford v Southampton betting tips.

Match Odds

Hasenhuttl was “proud” of his team’s performance at Stamford Bridge, saying “everyone did a fantastic job” in which they matched Chelsea’s 3-4-3 formation.

Saints have drawn four of their last five away games and were looking good for a point when they faced Chelsea in the Premier League only for the game to turn on its head with the dismissal of skipper James Ward-Prowse 13 minutes from time in a 3-1 loss.

Saturday’s match to end in a draw is 23/10 and it’s 16/5 on that outcome with goals at both ends as one of our Watford v Southampton betting tips.

A goal in both halves and the match to be drawn is priced at 5/1 as one of our #GetAPrice specials.

Watford were hammered 5-0 by Liverpool in their first match under Ranieri, so it’s hard to know what to expect from Saturday’s game.

It may pay dividends to look at the over 2.5 goals or 3.5 markets which are 5/6 and 2/1 respectively.

Both teams to score, over 2.5 goals in the match and either team to win is 6/4 in a match where anything looks possible.

Talking Tactics

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel admitted he does not enjoy facing Southampton “because they are so hard to play against…You get intensity, high presses and a team full of courage and speed”.

Hasenhuttl is expected to make wholesale changes for Saturday’s game and is likely to revert to a 4-4-2 at Vicarage Road where Ward-Prowse is available from suspension.

Midfielder Stuart Armstrong started his first game of the season at Chelsea, but was withdrawn with 13 minutes to go, and Mohamed Elyounoussi should be available having undergone minor hand surgery, but Armando Broja has been ruled out with an ankle problem.

Watford trio Christian Kabasele, Francisco Sierralta and Peter Etebo all missed the win at Goodison Park through injury.

Josh King played as the sole striker in a 4-1-4-1 formation and having scored a hat-trick is likely to lead the line again.

Goalscorer Odds

King’s heroics mean he is 11/2 to open the scoring, 21/10 to find the net any time and 14/1 to bag at least two goals while another hat-trick is 125/1.

Ismaila Sarr is 6/1 and 23/10 in the first two mentioned markets while Juraj Kucka is 4/1 to be on target as he was on Merseyside.

Colombian winger Cucho Hernandez has started both games under Ranieri and is 9/1 and 10/3 in the two options in our Watford v Southampton betting tips.

Armando Broja, who scored Saints’ second in a 2-2 draw with Burnley last weekend, was rested on Tuesday and is 5/1 to break the deadlock or 15/8 just to score, the same odds as Adams, while Ward-Prowse can be backed at 7/1 and 14/5.
