Glorious Goodwood: Free tips for the second day of the Festival

Published:

On a day in which just one favourite managed to justify their odds it was left to the bookies to count their profits at Goodwood yesterday.

Strong Suit was our saviour yesterday and while we fancied Fiorente to get beaten, we didn’t see Namibian getting up to beat him on the line.

However today brings a new dawn with a chance to recoup those losses from yesterday and in Frankel, many believe they have a banker that is worthy of legend status.

2.35 Vintage Stakes: Red Duke – 11/4

This is a race in which punters should not be looking outside the first four in the betting and considering 25 of the last 31 winners have come from the top two in the market, preference is for one of the joint-favourites.

Red Duke ticks all the trend boxes and having beaten his co-favourite Chandlery at Newmarket earlier in the month, he can do so again today.

3.10 Sussex Stakes: Canford Cliffs – 11/8

For reasons why we’ll explain in more detail in out race preview but in a nutshell, all the trends and stats are for Frankel except for one.

The weight allowance is a huge benefit for Frankel and that could be what makes the difference, but if you are to go back to Royal Ascot on a day when both horses ran over the same trip on the same going on the same day, Canford Cliffs posted the faster time.

For those who aren’t keen on backing odds-on runners, Canford Cliffs offers more than a reasonable chance of upsetting the solid favourite today.

3.45 UBS Stakes: Bridle Belle – 10/1

A very tough handicap to call this and there are a number of runners who tick the trend boxes, but if Bridle Bell can transfer the form she’s shown up north to the Sussex downs, the 10/1 looks a big price.

We haven’t had a winning favourite of this race in the last 10 years so Halifax and Arch Fire are up against it today.
