2020 US Open betting tips: Johnson, Rahm, Thomas among favourites

The new PGA Tour season may have only just begun, but we’re already launching down the fairway for the first Major of the campaign this weekend, the US Open.
New York’s Winged Foot Golf Club hosts the event for the fifth time, with Tiger Woods stating that the Mamaroneck venue is one of the three toughest in the world.

US Open favourites
Our traders are no fools, and they’ve chalked up Dustin Johnson as 8/1 favourite for a reason. DJ has been in sensational form in recent months, with two wins (Northern Trust and TOUR Championship) plus two seconds (PGA and BMW Championships) in his last four events.
But nobody wins at Winged Foot without hooking up their short-game, and it will be fascinating to see if Johnson can master the course’s notorious greens.
That’s where Jon Rahm could come in at 9/1. The Spaniard has also been in great form this summer, winning the Memorial Tournament in July and the BMW Championship last month.
Rahm’s short-game is arguably a touch more in-tune than Johnson’s at the moment, and that may pay dividends around Winged Foot’s legendary holes, where the winner’s score could easily be over-par.
The betting then drifts a touch from the leading duo, to Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele, each at 14/1.
Thomas has been inconsistent in recent events. The 27-year-old won the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational in July and was tied-second in the TOUR Championship last time out, but results elsewhere have been patchy, with three finishes outside the top-20 in three events during August.
The wins haven’t quite fallen for Schauffele yet in 2020, but the American has been remarkably consistent, posting top-14 finishes in five of his last seven events, including a fine t-2 at the TOUR Championship.
US Open ones to watch
Plenty will be keeping tabs on Collin Morikawa and Rory McIlroy, with the pair 16/1 apiece to win this weekend.
Morikawa has enjoyed a sterling year so far, with the 23-year-old winning the Workday Charity Open in July, before claiming his maiden Major at the PGA Championship in August. A tied-sixth at the TOUR Championship earlier this month adds further weight to his current form.
And what of McIlroy’s chances? The Northern Irishman is looking to end a six-year Major drought. Though Rory’s posted some steady results since Golf resumed in the summer, he isn’t quite lighting up the leaderboard as he was earlier in the year, when he was picking up top-fives with ease.
The 15-time Major winner hasn’t broken into the top-30 in any of his last four events, but he will be one of just 15 competitors this weekend who played Winged Foot when it last hosted the US Open back in 2006 – and who knows how beneficial that experience could be this weekend.
