Donald can move to head of FedEx Cup ranks with Deutsche Bank win
Published:Luke Donald has finished no worse than third on his last two appearances at TPC Boston and this makes 16/1 a massive price that he wins the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Donald is third favourite behind Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy for the second event of the FedEx Cup play-offs, where he currently lies 14th overall.
Nick Watney jumped to top spot from 49th with his victory at The Barclays, which earned him 2,500 points as well as his winner’s cheque.
Donald is 1,629 points back, but would have been far closer had he played in an equal number of events in comparison to those above him.
The world number two has only played in 14 events that offer FedEx Cup points, with only McIlroy playing fewer, with 13.
In his last two trips to TPC Boston, Donald has finished with an aggregate of 30-under, averaging just over 67.
If he maintains this average this year and shoots 16-under, he will be there or thereabouts at the finish.
One of the reasons for Donald’s strong results is his short game, with the course being one of the easiest on the PGA Tour calendar.
A strong putting success rate and finding greens in regulation will be the two essential statistics for players, with Donald ranking second on the whole tour in terms of the strokes he has gained on the greens.
Meanwhile, discounting majors, Donald has finished in the top 12 in his last five regular PGA Tour events.
Donald is 11/4 to finish in the top five at TPC Boston for the third visit in succession, while it is 3/2 that he is the top English finisher, ahead of Lee Westwood, Justin Rose, Ian Poulter, Greg Owen and Brian Davis.
