Grafite scores another double to help Wolfsburg climb to sixth
Published:Things are suddenly looking far brighter for the Bundesliga’s first ever English trainer Steve McClaren after his Wolfsburg side jumped up to sixth with a 2-1 victory over Freiburg.
It was the 2008/09 champions third win in nine days, with Brazilian striker Grafite replicating Arsenal’s Samir Nasri and scoring braces both in midweek and this weekend, and saw them overtake the likes of Bayern Munich and Hamburg.
McClaren’s Wolfsburg tenure didn’t begin quite as well as his spell with FC Twente ended, as they suffered three successive defeats, however a glance at the bigger picture softens those blows – the losses came against holders Bayern and top two Mainz and Borussia Dortmund.
They can now take heart from having the same number of points six games in as they did in their ultimately glorious season two years ago and at 12/1 are fifth favourites to win the league.
The result of matchday six though came at the Allianz Arena where Mainz extended their 100 per cent start to the campaign with a stunning 2-1 triumph over 5/6 title favourites Bayern Munich in theoretically their toughest fixture.
Despite the leaders opening a ten-point advantage over Louis van Gaal’s men, and being three clear of closest challengers Borussia Dortmund, they are still 10/1 to finish first.
