Hamilton’s Hungary GP chances up in smoke as Rosberg grabs pole
Published:Nico Rosberg looks nailed on to win his fifth Grand Prix of the season in Hungary after qualifying on pole, while Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton will start from the back of the grid.
Rosberg is now a 1/3 shot to claim the chequered flag at the Hungaroring, with the German finishing almost half-a-second faster than his nearest rival Sebastian Vettel (6/1), in the Red Bull.
The championship leader’s chances are greatly enhanced by the fact his teammate once gain suffered abysmal luck, as the back of Hamilton’s car caught fire early in Q1 to leave the Brit last on the grid for Sunday’s race.
This is another bitter blow for Hamilton who would have been confident of making up some of the 14-point gap in the World Championship standings at a circuit where he’s claimed four previous victories.
Of course, Hamilton suffered brake failure in qualifying at the recent German Grand Prix before fighting back from 20th to claim a podium finish at Hockenheim.
However, at the very narrow Hungaroring which is often described as the Monaco of track circuits, overtaking is a lot trickier than in Germany – meaning Hamilton’s uphill task grows that much steeper.
Jenson Button did win the Hungarian Grand Prix from 14th place back in 2006, though just getting onto the podium from 22nd position on the grid would be remarkable for his compatriot this time around.
Button is given odds of 66/1 after qualifying in seventh for the 2014 edition.
