Hilary Benn cut for next Labour Leader following Commons speech
Published:
Hilary Benn is now the 5/2 favourite to succeed Jeremy Corbyn and become the next leader of the Labour Party following a flurry of bets.
The Shadow Foreign Secretary was as big as 25/1 just a fortnight ago but his widely acclaimed speech on the Syria debate prompted a flood of money, forcing the Ladbrokes traders to slash those odds.
Benn received applause from both sides of the House of Commons last night and his rising popularity could have deeper repercussions for the current Labour chief.
Corbyn’s future prospects are increasingly bleak, with the bookies reporting continued betting on his being replaced before the year is out, at only 5/1.
Matthew Shaddick of Ladbrokes said: “Getting applauded by Tory MPs in the Commons is one thing, but Benn would need to win the support of a Labour membership which may not have been quite so impressed by his stance. We think Corbyn is probably safe…for the time being.”
