Home youngsters can cause a stir with next upset wins at US Open

Victoria Duval has been responsible for the biggest shock at the US Open so far when eliminating former winner and 11th seed Sam Stosur and the world-ranked 296 can spring another surprise in round two against Daniela Hantuchova.

Another young American, world-ranked 238 Sachia Vickery, can also give the home fans something to cheer and this pair make up a lucrative 40/1 underdog treble in the US Open second round with Alisa Kleybanova of Russia.

Hantuchova arrived at Flushing Meadows on a three-match hard-court losing streak and was hardly impressive against Maria Sanchez in the opening round, giving up 12 break-point opportunities and winning only a third of the points on her second serve.

This level may have been enough to beat one American, but relative unknowns from the country do have a track record for flourishing in Grand Slams.

After all, Melanie Oudin dumped out three top-30 players at the 2009 US Open and Sloane Stephens beat Serena Williams en route to the quarter finals of the last Australian Open.

Duval has the groundstroke power to dominate Hantuchova and it should be noted that she hit 23 winners against Stosur in the first round.

Sachia Vickery to beat Julia Glushko @ 7/4

It’s rare to see two players ranked outside of the top 100 meeting in the second round of a Grand Slam, but this is promising for a Vickery victory.

She came through her opener despite Mirjana Lucic-Baroni taking virtually all of her break points and key to her chances against Israeli Glushko will be attacking the second serve.

Given that the pair have previously trained together too, both should know of each other’s strengths and weaknesses and this match looks more 50/50 than the prices suggest.

Alisa Kleybanova to beat Jelena Jankovic @ 7/2

Kleybanova leads the head-to-head record with Jankovic 3-2 and also triumphed in their most recent meeting, albeit back in 2010.

Her serve is undoubtedly her most lethal weapon and will probably decide the result of this game. Kleybanova served 13 aces in the first round despite getting a little more than half of her first serves in.

If this percentage increases, Jankovic may find this tough, especially as she only managed to secure three break points in the whole match of her opener with Madison Keys.
