Glorious Goodwood tips: Stradivarius tops the bill on day one

Stradivarius

We’re off to the West Sussex Downs for Glorious Goodwood ahead of five days of top-class flat racing.

All the big names are present with Aidan O’Brien, John Gosden, Sir Michael Stoute, and Mark Johnston et al aiming for glory.

We’ll hope to get your opening day off to a decent start with some insight and tips.

NAP – Stradivarius – 3:35 Goodwood

Okay, so he’s not the most attractive price. But John Gosden’s Stradivarius looks nailed on to win the Goodwood Cup.

The four-year-old stayer has already won the Yorkshire Cup and the Ascot Gold Cup this season. And although the latter was a tight battle involving Vazirabad and Torcedor, the son of Sea The Stars looks like he’s getting better and better.

Frankie Dettori was on-board for both those wins. Andrea Atzeni takes the ride this time. But Atzeni is two from two with him with the pair having won this race and the Queen’s Vase at Ascot last year.

Torcedor will put up a challenge but Stradivarius will take all the beating.

NB – Suedois – 3:00 Goodwood

Breton Rock caused a massive shock in the Lennox Stakes last year chomping in at a massive 50/1.

However, there should be a slightly more straightforward feel to this year’s renewal. There are plenty of options near the top of the betting with Tip Two Win and Sir Dancelot looking strong.

But we’ve plumped for David O’Meara’s Suedois at the better prices. The seven-year-old was a very close third in last year’s race, beaten by just 1/2l.

And in the recent Summer Mile Stakes at Ascot, he was another close third to Beat The Bank. He’s got a Grade 1 win in the US at Keeneland last year and his run at Ascot was instructive for this race. He could well sneak in.

Lively Longshot – Federal Law – 2:25 Goodwood

Confiding and Dark Vision should take all the beating at the head of the betting for this renewal of the Vintage Stakes.

But at a much bigger price, it could be worth an each-way punt on Archie Watson’s precocious sprinter Federal Law.

The two-year-old Scat Daddy Colt ran a really nice race in his first start at Newcastle to finish second. And then he followed that up with a win at Salisbury in a top-class novice field.

Watson has been in fine form in recent weeks and it’d be no major surprise to see his charge hit the frame here.
