ICYMI: Ronda Rousey suffers brutal loss in UFC shocker

Usually international breaks mean things can go a bit quiet on the sport front, but there were plenty of memorable moments across the sporting world this weekend.

There was a huge upset in MMA, an emotional moment between father and son in Manchester, and an optimistic moment up in Blackburn.

Let’s start with the UFC…

Heading into her Bantamweight Title defence against Holly Holm at UFC 193, Ronda Rousey owned a perfect 12-0 record and the status as the sport’s most recognisable name, face and personality.

Rousey had accurately spoken in US TV chat shows last week about Holm’s fighting style, and the 34-year-old former boxer dominated the fight from the start.

Already suffering a heavy blow square on the face, Rousey was caught by more blows to the head, and as she stumbled, a decisive and brutal kick from Holm ended the contest.

Over in England, David Beckham was playing host to the final match of his UNICEF charity campaign.

The former Manchester United man has been playing football in all corners of the globe in recent weeks, and at Old Trafford a host of big names came together for a GB&Ireland v the Rest of the World clash.

Best of all though, was with 15 minutes to go. The fourth official holds up number seven and Beckham heads to the touchline, to be replaced by number seven Brooklyn Beckham.

Among the cheers, a chorus of ‘awww’ could be heard around Old Trafford. It got better five minutes later when Beckham Snr can be on the pitch and shared a few passes with his 16-year-old son.

Elsewhere, David Haye has given us something to discuss over the water cooler in the office this week.

It appears the former cruiserweight and heavyweight belt holder has become a bit restless after a three-year absence from the ring. Haye was scheduled to fight Tyson Fury in 2013, but it was postponed for a year when Haye injured his shoulder and was reportedly advised to retire from the sport. Having just turned 35, some may be sceptical of how successful a comeback might be, but according to social media at least, the Hayemaker appears to have plenty of opponents ready…

Back to football and Blackburn Rovers fans enjoyed a quietly happy weekend after the managerial appointment of Paul Lambert.

The Scot replaces Gary Bowyer with the Ewood Park side sixteenth in the Championship. Lambert led Norwich City into the Premier League, and his appointment has been met well by the Rovers faithful.
