Ignore big names for big price at Farmer’s Insurance Open

Appropriately, the Farmers Insurance Open boasts a stellar field to match the tournament’s famous location on the PGA Tour this week.

The likes of Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson head to the iconic Torrey Pines for the fifth week of the 2016 season, but none of that foursome catch Ladbrokes News’ eye from a betting point of view.

Day, the defending champion, and Fowler, who beat Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy to claim last week’s Abu Dhabi HSCB Golf Championship, head the market at 7/1 and 10/1 respectively, but it’s a 25/1 shot that we pin our hopes on.

Torrey Pines is a notoriously tough track to conquer, but it should be noted that both bombers off the tee and accurate iron wielders have won here in the past six years. What is important though, is previous experience of the course and few better our guy, Bill Haas, for that.

Only six men in the Farmers’ field have made more appearances at the tournament than Haas, who is the third-most accurate driver on the PGA Tour so far this season.

The 33-year-old has decent prior form here, having recorded four top-20 finishes at the tournament in his last five starts.

His purple patch in that stretch came between 2011 and 2013, where he reeled off two ninth places and a fourth, but his recent results on the tour suggest he can better that.

The 2011 FedEx Cup Champion was ninth at the CareerBuilder Challenge last week, his third consecutive top-20 finish of the season.

Speaking of impressive strings of form, Branden Grace is swinging it pretty well and heads the betting for the European Tour’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters at 7/1 as a result.

The South African, who won this tournament last year, has finished inside the top 10 in each of his last five starts and looks the one to beat on a course he relishes.
