Is Roger Federer still the man to beat at the Australian Open?

Roger Federer begins his defence of the Australian Open as 1/40 favourite against Aljaz Bedene this Sunday.

It should be a comfortable start for the 36-year-old, who’s chasing a record 20th Grand Slam title in Melbourne.

But is he still the man to beat?

He’s the clear 15/8 favourite to win the tournament. Rafael Nadal is the closest competitor back at 9/2.

As good as Federer remains in the twilight of his career, he’s so far ahead in the betting because so many rivals are suffering with injury problems.

Nadal is struggling with a knee issue. 5/1 shot Novak Djokovic hasn’t played in a competitive tournament since retiring in last year’s Wimbledon quarter-finals. Andy Murray has just undergone hip surgery and won’t be taking part at all.

Our traders see Grigor Dimitrov as the most likely winner outside the Big Four. But he’s all the way back at 10/1.

Federer himself showed that anything’s possible when he returned from injury to win this title last year. However, it would still be a surprise if he didn’t triumph again Down Under.
