ITV Racing Tips: Orazio can claim another Stewards Cup for Charlie Hills
Published:
The Glorious Goodwood meeting comes to a close with nearer a whimper than a bang. There is no Group 1 race scheduled as the track gives the valuable Coral Stewards Cup the prime-time slot on the card.
The sprint will be explosive and competitive but it’s the only standout race on an unusually subdued line-up on ITV.
The last of only six races of which the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes is the main support race, there will be four races from Goodwood and two from Newmarket.
It all kicks off at 13:30 on ITV and we have previewed three of the day’s significant races in our ITV Racing Tips.
A field of 11 for this Listed prize for fillies, of which plenty have shown promise. But there is one standout and she has been sent over from Ireland by Donnacha O’Brien.
Amusement has been very consistent in her ten starts but probably needs more than her two wins to date, the latest in a handicap, to justify her 540,000gns purchase price. She ran her best race to date when fourth behind Emily Dickinson in a Group 2 and that should be plenty good enough.
Frankie Dettori can sign off from a relatively quiet Goodwood, and even quieter one for John and Thady Gosden, with victory in this Group 2 prize.
Free Wind is officially 9lb better than the next highest rated filly in the field. She beat subsequent Royal Ascot winner Rogue Millennium at York in May and may have found the ground too quick for her when fifth in the Hardwicke Stakes. Back on soft ground, and against her own sex, she should be too good for these rivals.
Charlie Hills excels with sprinters and has used this race in the past as a lucrative step up the ladder for his future stars.
Both Magical Memory, who won in 2015, and Khaadem (2019) went on to compete at Group 1 level and Orazio could be the next to rise to similar heights. He looked very much on the up when posting handicap wins at Newmarket and Ascot but couldn’t quite complete the hat-trick in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot.
He finished only two and a half lengths behind the winner and was rallying at the end. He gets a second chance here under in-form Jim Corwley.
